SHSAT Prep Timeline by Grade, Plus Free Official Resources
When Should a Student Start Prepping for the SHSAT?
Most families start focused prep in 7th grade, roughly 12-14 months before the fall 8th-grade test date, though the exposure that makes prep effective, reading stamina and math fluency, starts building years earlier.
| Grade | Focus | Time commitment |
|---|---|---|
| 6th grade | Build reading volume and math fact fluency. No SHSAT-specific material needed yet. | Ongoing, not scheduled |
| 7th grade (fall-winter) | Take a full diagnostic. Identify whether gaps are knowledge, speed, or test strategy. | 1 diagnostic + light review |
| 7th grade (spring-summer) | Core content: algebra readiness, geometry basics, revising and editing mechanics, timed reading. | 3-5 hrs/week |
| 8th grade (fall) | Full-length computer-adaptive practice under real constraints: answer to move on, no skipping back. Weak-area drilling. | 4-6 hrs/week |
| 2 weeks before test | Taper volume, confirm test ticket and location, light review only, prioritize sleep. | 1-2 hrs/week |
What Free Official Practice Resources Exist?
The NYC DOE publishes a free official SHSAT Handbook with a full-length practice test every admissions cycle, and it's the only practice material guaranteed to reflect the real question style.
- NYC DOE Specialized High Schools page, official dates, eligibility, and the current SHSAT Handbook download.
- DOE-run Specialized High Schools Institute (DREAM), free multi-year prep for eligible students, run directly through the DOE.
- School-based guidance counselor SHSAT sessions, most NYC middle schools run at least one information session; ask your child's counselor directly.
- Public library free digital practice access, many NYC branches carry SHSAT prep databases through their online catalog at no cost.

Common SHSAT Prep Myths
"More practice tests always means a higher score."
Volume without review of why an answer was missed just repeats the same mistakes faster. A diagnostic that separates knowledge gaps from speed or strategy issues matters more than hours logged.
"Paper practice books are just as good as the real thing."
The SHSAT has been computer-based since fall 2025 and computer-adaptive since fall 2026. Paper practice doesn't replicate on-screen pacing or the adaptive difficulty curve.
